Going out on Valentine’s Day can get pretty expensive, and while you may not want to seem cheap on that special day, there are some things you should consider.

With some planning and some smart thinking, you might just be able to pull off a memorable day that won’t leave you with empty pockets.

1. Eat in before going out

When planning an evening that includes a meal and other activities, such as a concert or a movie, think about eating at home before going out. Not only will you save a ton of money, but you get to control the mood. This allows you and your date to relax and dine without having to worry about crowds, lost reservations, or overworked waiters.

If you don’t have confidence in your cooking skills, put together a platter of cheeses, bread, olive oil, and yummy nibbles. Add a bottle of good wine and you’ll have a tasty, romantic meal for two!

2. Try and avoid fixed price meals

A lot of restaurants usually promote special prices for multiple course meals on Valentine’s Day. Have a look at the restaurant’s normal menu and try and compare the costs and offerings, it can be possible that you are not saving much by going with the fixed price. Also, pay close attention to the portions that are in the fixed price specials, as these may be “for two” but only includes a single appetizer or dessert for you and your date to share.

3. Enjoy some budget entertainment

Don’t worry if you can’t afford those concert or cinema tickets, good quality entertainment that are only a few dollars, or even free can be found in most areas. It just comes down to interests and budget.

Museums and cultural centres sometimes close late and can offer exhibits or performances for free or for a very reasonable price. Coffee shops, local bars and even libraries may be running some form of entertainment that both of you can enjoy for a small entry fee.

4. Spend a day at the flea markets

Try on weird kimonos or fur coats, ogle vintage typewriters, and buy each other a quirky token of affection at the end of the day. At flea markets and thrift stores, looking is half the fun.

With only two weeks away, now is the time to start planning! Feel free to share your own Valentines on a budget idea.
